Damp
Yanick and I fed the animals in a cold rain that made our clothes heavy. I lingered over breakfast with a pot of hot coffee and pain beurre-miel, reading stories aloud to little Lisa. Children’s books illustrated in the sixties, that aesthetic recycled through Camelot, Aubrey Beardsley, and the flower children. I want to clothe myself in it, naturally.

I’ve been drinking infusions and green tea constantly all week, eating clementines and chocolate in bed while I read Ulysses. I’ve been dreaming about my friends in Georgia. The language is confused in the dreams, thinking in French and speaking in Franglais.
I have so little time left here and I can feel that the approach of my absence has made me dearer to this family, and them dearer to me.
Last night we watched part III of a made-for-tv adaptation of “Guerre et Paix” which is phenomenally well done. The costumes leave me sighing and wishing I hadn’t left Anna Karnenina in the storage unit in Philadelphia.
Yesterday I lead my second yoga class ever, Carina and her three children on carpets on the floor in front of the fire. Struggling to name the body parts in French.
The first time was almost half a year ago, on my twenty second birthday; my friends on mexican blankets in Tompkins Square Park, the coyote wandering up with his skateboard and mandolin and a bemused expression.
I desperately need to finish my essays for the application to Berkeley Rhetoric. I told myself they would be done before I left the farm: I have nine days now.

This is not related to your recent posts, but I was just reading your curatorial list at printed matter on mapping, and really enjoyed your comments. Have you ever seen “maybe logic?” A biopic about Robert Anton Wilson where he gives some discourse on language and perception. He said the map is not the territory, concerning people’s use of language to conceptualize their experience and subsequently subscribe to those concreted and categorized realities without question.
Also, are you from philadelphia? I just ask because i saw it in something you said. I just moved to philly from providence, and actually, used to work at printed matter a few years ago. Did you ever hear the story of how A.A. got his name.

Hey– sorry it took me so long to notice that you’d commented; I apparently don’t have my settings done right to alert me when it happens.
I have not seen this biopic but it sure does sound interesting. Right now I’m reading “The Spell of the Sensuous” by David Abram, which is also about Language and Perception.
I’m not from Philly, but most of my family is, and I’ve spent a bit of time there. One of my favorite cities. I just moved out to the West Coast and I’m loving it here.
What’s the story of AA’s name?
Peace.
